Barcelona, 2013: La Manzana de la Discordia (Casa Amatller, Casa Batllo, Casa Lleo Morera)

Casa Amatller, by Josep Puig i Cadafalch, 

together with the adjacent Casa Batllo, designed by Antoni Gaudi, 

and Casa Lleo Morera, by Lluis Domenech i Montaner, 

are part of the 'manzana de la discordia' or 'Apple of Discord' of Barcelona, 

so-named because it features buildings in sharply contrasting styles.

Calling the area the 'Apple of Discord' 

thus refers to the presence of the major Modernista architects 

all competing for the most impressive architecture on the very same city block; 

this label dates from the turn of the twentieth century, 
when much of the local press greatly satirized the new architectural styles of Modernisme.
