It was raised in the 14th century on the location of an old Roman church dating from the 12th century,
but as the community grew and the small citadel turned into a true burgh,
its inhabitants decided to build a much bigger church with a tower that would “reach the skies”.
The works for the new cathedral started in 1380, but because the citadel was constantly threatened by attacks,
the people abandoned the construction for a while and instead they fortified the defense ramparts.
The church was finished in 1520 when they erected the steeple.
